My grandpa suffered from incurable lung disease. In his last days, he constantly felt he was unable to breathe. He wanted to stop all treatment and go home, but his children would not let him. In the name of love they prolonged his pain.
In China, we do not often talk about death. We do not accept death – some can not even honour the fact that themselves or their family members are aging, weakening, and eventually going to die.
I created this app to deliver the message that death is not the end of life – it is the beginning of a new journey. Plan ahead, make it special, and we should be able to face it with grace.
Step 1: Immerse
The experience starts with a loading page and an animated splash page. The dark, wind-swept desert slowly comes into focus, leading us to the world of death.
The design decisions were made based on our general impressions of death:
- Appearance: dark
- Font: Serif
- Secondary colour: purple
Step 2: Engage
Now, we see a collection of options that can make our death a ceremony. The content is organised in 2 sections:
- Featured items, as a carousel, for quick selection
- All items, categorised, for further browsing
Tap an item to see details. We can add an item to our wishlist or the cart.
Step 3: Convert
In the wishlist, we can add a single item, or all items, to the cart. That means we can not only book the service for ourselves, but also for others.
I have included the thumbnail and a short description of each item. This helps to refresh our memory; it also makes the screen more visually attractive.
But are you serious about this?
Absolutely. In fact, when I was ideating the app, I started to get more relevant content in my feed. I did my research to ensure the options I provide in this app either already exist, or will become available in the near future. For example, the ‘Above the blues’ option is backed by this information.
